2 California Centers Magazine | May 2017 Trendsetting C alifornia has been the launch pad for many a retail and restaurant concept. Trends of- ten start on the left coast and many in the retail industry keep an eye on California for the latest trends. While Southern California produces the style and fashion trends, Northern California has been the birthplace of many technology and social trends. All of these affect consumers' tastes for retail goods and restaurants. Two of the biggest trends in California now — in retail — are grocery stores and international quick service restau- rants. Grocery stores want to be more than a place to pick up necessities. Many are becoming an experience, where shop- ping for food becomes more about the time you spend shop- ping for food. A number of concepts are adding restaurants, wine bars, sushi bars, juice bars, taco concepts and the like to add to their list of fresh prepared concepts so that they be- come more than a grocery store. We take a look at this trend, and some of the new players entering the state, on page 14. Meanwhile, quick service restaurants are also picking up on trends in cuisine. While "California cuisine" has become a common term among restaurants nationwide, California has a diverse population that supports a variety of ethnic restaurants. What started in the Chinatowns and Kore- atowns of the state has now caught on with a younger pop- ulation that likes to try new and diverse foods. Trends like Asian curry and ramen, and Hawaiian poke are expanding throughout California. We talk to several landlords and op- erators about why international foods make sense for their markets on page 24. Also in this issue, we feature a short profile on Centers Business Management, who is celebrating its 30th anni- versary serving the Southern California market this year. From property management to leasing, the company is well known in the state to many shopping center owners. Please see page 33 for the article.
