2 California Centers Magazine | September 2018 On The Water T he combination of shopping and dining in a waterfront location has been a recipe for success for many centers, especially in Califor- nia, where the climate is conducive to spending time outdoors. From tour- ism oriented centers like San Fran- cisco's Pier 39 and Monterey's Can- nery Row in Northern California to Fashion Island in Orange County and Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, the water — or view thereof — can be considered an anchor. Now, there's a new crop of retail and entertainment developments coming along that use their proximity to water as a draw for visitors. In this issue, we take a look at some of these projects, starting on page 14. Healthcare has also become a larger factor in retail en- vironments. From urgent care centers to dental practices and doctor's offices, healthcare tenants are more frequently found at shopping centers throughout the state as medical tenants promote convenience as a deciding factor for where patients choose service providers. We take an in-depth look at this trend, and how it is affecting tenant mix and retail traffic, on page 26. In early October, the industry will gather for the ICSC Western States Conference Deal Making in Los Angeles. We will be in attendance and exhibiting, so please stop by and see us at booth 511. For those involved in the marketing and leasing of tempo- rary and pop-up tenants, as well as those involved in out- of-home media for retail environments, our sister magazine, Ancillary Retail, is producing the Ancillary Retail Expo 2019, to be held in January in Daytona Beach, Florida. For more information, please see the ad on page 25 and visit We are also busy making plans for Entertainment Experi- ence Evolution 2019, to be held February 12-13, 2019 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. If you are working to incorporate more entertainment, dining, on-the-cusp re- tail and food halls to your center(s), you won't want to miss this conference. This year, the conference is expanding with a new host hotel and we have added a number of features and panels to cover the latest evolutions in retail.
