Ready To Deal A number of deals get done each year at the ICSC Mon- terey Idea Exchange. Now that we are well into the frst quarter, many retailers have their game plans set and are actively scouting locations not just for 2015, but for 2016 and beyond. We feature Te American Tin Can- nery Shopping Center on our cover this month. Not only does this tie into Monterey, but it is timely, as the Cannery Row Company, who has operated the property for the past 10 years, is seeking even more tenants for the historic center. If you have time, I recommend studying a little on Cannery Row. Te area has an interesting and rich history. Relevant to the retail indus- try is the amazing story of its revitalization, originally started in the late 1940s by people seeking to see the setting of John Steinbeck's book, Cannery Row. Local entrepreneurs saw the potential for tourism and really began to revitalize the area in the late 1960s, leading it to what it is today. Te addition of the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the 1980s really cemented the Monterey Peninsula on the map as a tourism destination. To- day, the peninsula remains one of California's top destinations, with more than 8 million visitors each year. With the consumer base more technologically savvy, center owners have had to become smarter at attracting shoppers to centers. In this issue, we investigate creative ways that shop- ping center owners in the state are marketing their properties to consumers. Tis includes everything from events to Internet technology to more robust signage. See page 22 for more. In this issue, we present a number of retailers who are ac- tively seeking sites in the state, including Bright Now! Dental (page 6); Auntie Anne's (page 10); Ross Dress For Less (page 14); Weight Watchers (page 16); and Smoothie Factory (page 18). Our next issue will be in May, when we will distribute California Centers at the ICSC RECon show in Las Vegas.
