12 California Centers Magazine | March 2015 C C sionate nature of the franchise part- ners affliated with FOCUS Brands' operations. The bakery's crew members recog- nize the importance of the philosophy of serving "fresh, hot, golden brown soft pretzels with friendly, courteous service in a sparkling clean store." The pretzel dough is mixed, twisted and baked to a golden state of perfection in full view of customers, who receive them fresh from the oven. Every year Auntie Anne's shops roll more than 100 million pretzels. There are typical- ly eight varieties of pretzels available at any given time. Among the addi- tional rewarding snack items featured on the menu board are pretzel stix, nuggets, and pretzel dogs. Customers can also choose from various favors of dipping sauces, among which are cheese, marinara, sweet glaze, and cream cheese. Beverage choices en- compass sodas, lemonade, fruity fa- vored lemonade mixers, frozen lem- onade mixers and favored icees. The 1,600-plus unit franchise is cur- rently operating in 48 states and more than 30 countries. As of this writing, there were 72 Auntie Anne's locations open in Califormia. Existing units are positioned in shopping malls, outlet centers, airports, train stations, trav- el plazas, colleges/universities, de- partment stores, amusement parks, military bases, and non-traditional shopping and entertainment centers all over. Auntie Anne's is actively de- veloping additional franchise partner relationships (and always prospecting for future locations in new and exist- ing market regions). The chain's store prototype options are fexible with regard to accommo- dating a variety of venue types. Typi- cal in-line sites can range is size from 500 to 1,000 square feet. Kiosk locations require 200-plus square feet of space, plus utility hook ups; and an addition- al 150 to 200 square feet of space in the vicinity of the kiosk for offsite storage. A satellite retail location involves bak- ing being done at a main store, thus allowing for unit size of approx. 78 square feet (these are ideal for a ven- ue that already has an in-line Auntie Anne's store elsewhere). Among the factors contributing to a successful location: high pedestri- an traffc (counts of 30 people every fve minutes during off-peak hours, 70 people every fve minutes during lunch and dinner periods, and over 100 every fve minutes on weekends); positioning toward the center of the mall and on the most active level; if a food court location, it must be on the corner or at the entrance. Ideal centers will have a minimum of two anchors, with sales exceeding $30 million each; the percentage of food offerings ver- sus other types should not exceed 20 percent (and the sales fgures of other food vendors will be considered). Auntie Anne's Pretzels received the 2014 Technomic's Chain Restaurant Consumers' Choice Award for crave- ability, and was granted the World- Class Franchise honor (the most pres- tigious award in franchising) by the Franchise Research Institute for the past several consecutive years. The brand was recently ranked number 34 on Entrepreneur magazine's 2015 Franchise 500. The success of the com- pany lies in the quality and diversity of products, exceptional and effcient service, and the enticing and fun ac- tivity of pretzel making.
